Stages of grouse moor management
Grouse live on heather moorland and shooting estates manage their heather to raise the best 'crop' of birds to be targeted. That process depends largely on the controlled burning of areas of heather on a rotating basis. In the foreground of the image there are the charred twigs of a recent burn. Beyond that there's thick heather, left as shelter for grouse. Further out the geometric shapes of low heather areas and whitened twigs of older burns can be seen. Finally, in the distance, the process of burning itself.
