The A71 is a major road running for 67½ miles between the suburbs of central Edinburgh and Irvine on the North Ayrshire coast.

The A71 was formerly a trunk route from the east to the west coast of Scotland but its importance has lessened since the construction of the M8 motorway and it has since been downgraded to a mixture of primary and secondary routes. From Edinburgh to Darvel, it is now a secondary route; from Darvel to Irvine, it has retained its primary route status.
