Coulter’s Candy Statues in Galashiels
Coulter’s Candy Statues in Galashiels
The statues in the Market Place commemorate Robert Coltard (1833-1880), a former Galashiels weaver and sweet seller, who wrote the famous children’s rhyme Ally Bally Bee. The statues are the work of Innerleithen sculptor Angela Hunter. Some descendants of Robert Coltard were at the unveiling ceremony of the main statue on 20/09/19 along with Jimmie Macgregor who performed Coulter’s Candy on National television in the 1950s and 1960s. The two figures of Little Jock and Wee Jeannie, who are mentioned in Ally Bally Bee, were added to the main statue of Robert Coltard in December 2019. For a closer view of the main statue, see NT4936 : Coulter’s Candy Statue in Galashiels. For a closer view of Little Jock, see NT4936 : Little Jock in Market Place, Galashiels and little Jeannie, see NT4936 : Wee Jeannie in Market Place, Galashiels.
