This sculpture of Sir Edward Elgar is situated adjacent to Hereford Cathedral on Cathedral Green. The sculpture was commissioned by the Elgar in Hereford Group and sculpted by Jemma Pearson. It was unveiled in 2005 by mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker.
This sculpture captures Elgar leaning on a bicycle gazing at the cathedral. For Elgar cycling was a popular pastime, he regularly cycled the local lanes, exploring the countryside of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. His bicycle was a Sunbeam bicycle, nicknamed "Mr Phoebus". He even cycled from Worcestershire to watch Wolverhampton Wanderers.
SO5039 : Hereford Cathedral Sadly however the many reincarnations of this west front over the years has left us now with this incongruous neo-Gothic facade dating from 1902-08AD.
