I think this photo is looking to the south with Brussleton Wood on the horizon to the right.

I recall as a youngster in the 40's and early 50's that just behind the metal barrier there was a wooden property owned by the Tobin's.

At that time there was a tower known as Brussleton Folly at the top of the wood that was almost a ruin being demolished some years later.

Apparently before WW2 it was a favoured family walk up Haggs Lane and through the edge of the wood to the Folly which was a good picnic spot and viewpoint.

The Tobins made ice cream pre and post war and sold in Shildon and beyond using a horse and cart.

I was told they also sold ice cream and other refreshments from their home to walkers in the 1930's.

I know the area well and use the Public Rights of Way when leading walks for the Ramblers Association.
