Entrance to the Ice House in Fishpond Wood
Entrance to the Ice House in Fishpond Wood
Thought to be about 200 years old. It was built by the Yorke Family of nearby Bewerley Hall. Ice was gathered from the fish pond, and stored inside with the help of straw. Servants would transport it down to the hall for the preservation of foodstuffs and the making of ice cream.
Ice could last up to 18 months in the large cavern-like structure inside.
