Apedale Valley Light Railway - Tracks to the Trenches
The third event remembering the use of railways in WWI. This goods train is topped and tailed by WWI vintage locomotives, although only one saw action. That was the locomotive nearest the photographer - Baldwin No. 44656 0f 1917. This is a 4-6-0T weighing 14.5 tons in working order. After the war it worked in what was to become Pakistan building a military railway and finished its working life serving sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh. It was withdrawn in 1983. At the rear is Hudswell Clarke No. 1238 of 1916 that worked in the goldfields of Ghana. Nonetheless, for this event it was turned out in appropriate WWI livery.
