The log has obviously been down sometime, and is well colonised by mosses and fungi. The white patches are new growth of Kretzschmaria [Ustulina] deusta LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) an ascomycete or sac fungus LinkExternal link. As it matures it will become black, crusty and then brittle; see detail in NT2470 : Kretzschmaria deusta on an old log. There is no official British common name, but Brittle Crust has been used. The dominant flowering plant is the alien and invasive Few-flowered Garlic or Leek [Allium paradoxum].
