The Vanguard Way in the Ashdown Forest
This path is a well-worn one between the car park and many of the places associated with the Winnie the Pooh stories, including the memorial to A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard at Gills Lap (aka The Enchanted Place), the Heffalump Trap & Lone Pine, and Roo's Sandy Pit. It shows up the sandy soils hereabouts, and away from the path the plentiful heather is much in evidence. The view across The Weald here looks towards the Greensand Ridge.
Although this was January the gorse was flowering but then gorse flowers virtually the whole year, hence the saying "When gorse is out of bloom, kissing is out of season". Gorse is a typical plant of heathland and acid soils.
