Woolworths (or 'Woolies' as it was affectionately known), 1909-2009, was a popular chain of high street stores, selling a wide variety of household goods, toys and entertainment. The English branch of Woolworths was founded by Frank Woolworth, in Liverpool in 1909.
At its peak there were 819 Woolworths around the UK and Ireland.
In November 2008 Woolworths went into administration and by January 2009 all the shops had closed and 27,000 staff laid off.
