The premises on the corner of Treacle Brow and what was then Acorn Lane (now Stockport Road) were occupied by William Crook in 1824 who opened it up as shop and beerhouse. In 1838 it obtained a full licence under the name William IV. In 1864 the name was changed first to the Hatters Arms and then in the 1870s to The Werneth.

In 1960 the landlord's son Cephas Howard got together with other musicians and formed the Temperance Seven. In the 1970s it was a Boddington's pub. In recent years it has closed and re-opened a number of times but has now been converted into a private residence.
