This exceptionally fine war memorial, designed by Mario Rutelli of Palermo, is considered to be amongst the finest in Britain and makes a striking landmark closing the southern end of the curved Promenade to the west of the castle, proudly overlooking the town and the Irish Sea.
The 65 ft high memorial, which was unveiled 14 September 1923, records the names of 111 Aberystwyth men who died as a result of action during the First World War and 78 men and women who died during the Second World War.
The memorial is crowned by a lead statue of the winged Victory holding a laurel wreath and standing on a globe; to the base of the west face is a fine figurehead sculpture climbing out of tangled foliage which represents Humanity emerging from the effect of war. The main column has tall thin wreaths to alternative sides and the whole rests on pedestal with Great War Medallion. The inscription in Welsh is 'Dros Ryddid' (For Freedom) and in English 'Greater Love for no man than this...' (
