NY4520 : Stone pillars at Bonscale Tower

taken 9 years ago, near to Howtown, Cumbria, England

Stone pillars at Bonscale Tower
Stone pillars at Bonscale Tower
Two finely crafted cairns perch above the steep front of Bonscale Pike offering a much grander view of Ullswater than the nearby summit. The name 'Bonscale Tower' presumably refers to one of these pillars - OS maps seem to suggest that this may be applicable to the fell itself. In Wainwright's 'Far Eastern Fells' (published in 1957) the descriptions suggest that there was just the one pillar here, possibly the lower one. AW refers disparagingly to another 'higher pillar' ('the effort of amateurs') but his sketch plan places this south of the actual summit.
