Fawley Hill Railway - marine steam engine
This strictly private site is home to this inverted vertical compound marine engine. It was built by Plenty & Son Ltd of Newbury as works No. 1702 and delivered in 1901. It was fitted in a three-masted yacht designed and built by Ernest L Comfort of Sunbury-on-Thames, launched 1902 and named Devonia. She was 91’ long x 14’ beam, 27 NRT and 56 GRT. Her name was changed to Joy in 1910 and in 1922 she became Lady Gertrude. By the time of scrapping in 1972 she was named Arlette. The engine was saved and rebuilt by S J Wharton of Witney and was moved to Fawley in 1976.
The slide valve cylinders are 10” & 20” x 15” stroke and it is fitted with manually operated Stephenson link reverse gear. The single slipper guides are carried on the surface condenser and the air pump is driven by levers from the LP crosshead. It is turned slowly by a concealed electric motor. Steam was raised by a boiler 8’ diameter by 8’ 6” long.
