SU8695 : Hughenden - St Michael & All Angels - Piscina
taken 10 years ago, near to Hughenden Valley, Buckinghamshire, England
Although originally dating from the C14th, the church of St Michael & All Angels in Hughenden was almost entirely rebuilt in 1875 by Sir A.W. Blomfield, and has a distinctly Victorian feel to it. The exceptions to this are to be found in the North Chapel immediately to the north of the Chancel, where there are stone effigies of knights and tomb slabs. There are also two C15th moulded arches between this chapel and the Chancel, and a C14th ogee piscina in the Chancel.
This church however, is most famous for its association with former Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli (21 December 1804 – 19 April 1881) who is buried in a crypt beneath the east end of the church. As well as his tomb (see SU8695 : The Primrose Tomb) there is a monument inside the church to him from Queen Victoria with a profile portrait carved by R.C. Belt, and memorial glass to him in the East window. Another window (to the northwest) commemorates Queen Victoria's escape from assassination.
The church is EH Grade II* listed Link
