Disused lock on the River Bain
Horncastle Canal

The Horncastle Canal largely followed the course of the River Bain for 11 miles, through 12 locks from the River Witham near Dogdyke to Horncastle. Engineered by William Jessop and John Rennie, it opened in 1802 and was never really financially viable, finally superseded by the opening of the Kirkstead to Horncastle branch railway line in 1854. With increasing competition from the railways and mounting debts, it was finally abandoned on 23rd September 1889.
