The haws of the hawthorn are edible, and are frequently made into jellies or syrups to flavour other things like fruit dishes or wines. They were also used in a variety of traditional medicines for heart conditions.

Haws have a single seed, and are technically "pomes" rather than berries. Like an apple, the edible surround to the fruit is formed by the swelling of the base of the original bud.
