Ornate and not so old - Shobdon, Herefordshire
An interior view of Shobdon parish church showing the 'striking' blue and white 18th century rebuilding by Viscount Bateman. For whatever reason and his view prevailed, he wanted the old 12th century church demolished. The new church, its style Rococo Gothick, was built from 1752 - 56 - work supervised by the Hon Richard Bateman, a brother of the Viscount. Only the 13th century tower and the Shobdon Arches remain from the previous building. Did he think what he was doing as the old structure fell to the ground? I don't think SPAB - Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings - was around then, sadly. The building was Grade I listed on 11th June 1959. Time taken 11.11 BST (British Summer Time).
