The old harbour lighthouse, Dunure
This old lighthouse was built in 1811 and was deactivated in the 1850's. There would have been a coal fire inside the lighthouse and this would have been lit when an incoming vessel was expected. There was an opening in the seaward side, at the level of the brazier, which was blocked by a door. When an incoming vessel was seen, the door was opened to guide the vessel in. The structure was built of sandstone and this is now suffering from extreme erosion. It is on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland.
