The southern entrance to Sevenoaks Tunnel
The southern entrance to Sevenoaks Tunnel
The railway between Chislehurst and Tonbridge was opened by the South Eastern Railway on 2nd March 1868. This shortened its route from London to Dover which previously went via Redhill. From 1994 until 2003 Eurostars ran along this line to and from the Channel Tunnel. Here a Charing Cross bound train is on its way uphill from Hildenborough station and has just disappeared into Sevenoaks Tunnel where its lights can still be seen. At 3,496 yards long and just a few yards short of two miles, Sevenoaks Tunnel is the longest rail tunnel in the south of England, outside of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and the London Underground. It takes the line under the Greensand Ridge. This view is from Morley's Road.
