SJ5686 : The Ferry Tavern

taken 12 years ago, near to Penketh, Warrington, England

The Ferry Tavern
The Ferry Tavern
The Ferry Tavern at Fidlers Ferry (or Fiddler's Ferry)*, overlooking the tidal River Mersey.

The inn was built when the Sankey Canal extension opened in 1762, but probably replaced an earlier one. There had been a ferry here from early times but it closed when the Manchester Ship Canal was constructed in the late nineteenth century.

*The name "Fidlers" was traditionally spelt with a single "d" although the power station and most modern maps spell it "Fiddler's" (with or without the apostrophe) LinkExternal link Pennine Waterways.
