A “Tesco Express”, on the Upper Newtownards Road, on the site of a former wallpaper shop which had built an extension without planning permission. There is a sign at the door, behind the bollards and litter bin, reminding customers that today is the first day of the levy on non-recyclable plastic bags (5p per bag). Tesco was founded in East London in 1919 by Jack Cohen. The Tesco name first appeared in 1924.
In 1995 it became the UK's largest supermarket chain, and is now one of the top three in the world.
