Romanesque arch
Romanesque arch
Remains of a highly decorated Romanesque arch c1150 in the former Gilstrap Library building Link in the castle grounds. The stones were stored in the castle undercroft for over 50 years before their relocation here in 2008. Its origins are unclear, but two popular theories prevail ... it was the doorway to the castle chapel or it was a doorway from a dissolved local religious house relocated to the castle in the mid-16th century.
