The Bank Quay, Larne

I haven’t been able to discover exactly when ships started calling at what was known as “The Bank” on the western shore of Larne Lough but it seems to have been before the 1830’s. The quays were gradually improved and continued to handle (mainly coal) cargoes until the mid-1990’s. The “Ballygarvey” is discharging a cargo of coal direct to the coalyard on the quay. The cranes dated from WWII and were dismantled on closure.

John Kelly Limited, Belfast. Coal merchant and former shipowner

Once the biggest of its kind in Belfast, the company still exists but the ships and family connection have gone.
