Celtic Crucifix - Front
Celtic Crucifix - Front
This highly unusual Celtic Crucifix is situated on a plinth in the recess of a window in the southern wall towards the western end of the nave of St Clement's Rodel (Tùr Chliamainn, Roghadal).
I say it is unusual because it is the only instance I have come across of a depiction of the crucified Christ on a Celtic style cross, which are normally adorned only with typical Celtic geometric designs, as indeed the back of this cross is (see NG0483 : Celtic Crucifix - Rear).
I am sure that this cross predates the church here (which is early C16th) - as I would think this is nearer 1000 years old at a guess.
