St Margaret's Church, Bodelwyddan is popularly known as the “Marble Church” because of the varieties of marble used in its construction. It is one of the best known and most spectacular churches in North Wales and is a prominent landmark along the A55 trunk road, being visible for many miles (its spire rises to a height of 202 feet). It is dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch.
The church took just over four years to build; the foundation stone being laid on 24 July 1856, it was consecrated by the Bishop of St Asaph on 23 August 1860. It is a Grade II* listed building (Cadw reference 1377 Link ).
Several of the graves relate to the Kinmel riots. In 1919 several hundred Canadian soldiers, impatient at their slow repatriation back home to Canada, rioted at the Kinmel camp for 2 days. Troops fired on them to restore order resulting in several deaths.
Many of the other English and Canadian graves (and a couple of German prisoners of war) are of those who died of the pneumonia / flu epidemic after the armistice.
