The dome, Castle Howard
The dome, Castle Howard
On the night of November 9th, 1940, a disastrous fire which started in the southeast wing of Castle Howard, spread to the Great Hall, destroying many rooms and the central dome. Antonio Pellegrini's painting, 'The fall of Phaeton', which had decorated the underside of the dome since 1712, was also destroyed in the blaze. The dome was eventually rebuilt in 1962 and the painting was recreated by Scott Medd, a Canadian artist.
