The Lang Cairn: smaller cairn near western end
See NS4581 : The Lang Cairn for the main description of the Lang Cairn itself.

The western end of the Lang Cairn is positioned centrally on the skyline in this image, but the dark area in the foreground was the location of a much smaller nearby cairn. For the archaeological details, see: LinkExternal link

In the booklet "Off the Main Road" (1976), I.M.M.MacPhail discusses the Lang Cairn, but goes on to mention that "at the west end of the cairn is a round structure, which has been identified as the lime-kiln of the Gallangad estate". I have not encountered this particular explanation elsewhere, and it is not mentioned in the archaeological reports.

For a closer view of the ground in the centre of this darker area, see NS4581 : The Lang Cairn: small cairn near western end.
The Lang Cairn

This is largest and best preserved of several Clyde-type cairns in this area. See LinkExternal link (at WoSAS) for full details. It is given statutory protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.
