SX4655 : St Barnabas Church

Church of St Barnabas, Stuart Road, Stoke, Devonport

The original church was designed by James Piers St Aubyn in 1885 and because of limited funding was opened in stages between 1886 and 1894. It was faced with limestone with window and door jambs of red bricks, and it had a bell turret but no tower or spire. The nave had aisles of five bays on each side, with Ham Hill stone piers and brick arches and transepts to north and south. The walls were lined with banded red and yellow bricks.

In 2002 the old church was demolished to be replaced in 2003 by the present smaller building, in traditional style, which also houses a doctor's surgery and community centre. A block of 32 flats for the elderly was also constructed and named St Barnabas Court. Part of the ground to the east of the old church has been turned into a community garden, enabling the new church to be seen from the road.

From 2016 the congregation of St Barnabas joined that of St Michael’s in Albert Road, Devonport, and the St Barnabas building was leased to Redeemer Church Plymouth .
