There seems to be some confusion as to what are the remains of Keldheads Smelt Mill, and at least 3 contributors have given that title to a building within this square, which is not the actual smelt mill,
The building that causes some confusion was the boiler house that contained a pumping engine for drainage of the mine. [source: 'Mines and Miners of Wensleydale' by I M Spensley - 2014]. The smelt mill was further up the valley beyond Tullis Cote Farm and just beyond the peat store, which is still standing and now used as a barn. Of the original Keld Heads Smelting Mills, very little remains other than a few low walls and piles of stones now well covered in vegetation and located at about SE078911, beyond which can be traced the lines of the flue systems which were eventually extended right up to Cobsacr at SE058931. The site of the former smelt mill is shown on first edition OS 6" maps of 1856, but by 1895 the mill is shown as 'disused'.
