J6356 : The Somme memorial garden, Cloughey (1)
taken 13 years ago, near to Cloghy, Co Down, Northern Ireland
The following is a quotation from The Cloughey and District Community Association’s website: “The new garden replaced some informal murals that also related to the First World War. We believe that the new memorial combines a fitting tribute with a beautiful garden area for everyone who wants to stroll through or sit in contemplation on the seats provided.
The final part of the formal garden has now been installed - a centrepiece by local artist Owen Crawford in the form of a war grave headstone in Portland Stone. The illustration shows 2 children holding hands symbolizing hope for the future. The Arts Council for Northern Ireland grant-aided this sculpture through their "re-imaging Communities" initiative”.
