Dr Aaron P. Bryant

Following a tenure in the US Army as a special operations soldier, Aaron P. Bryant has committed to learning and understanding why he had difficulty understanding his inability to be a good husband, father, friend, and co-worker. His exterior self would provide enough camouflage to get himself to a certain point in his life. Still, the odds were against him, and the challenges to protect himself from others were increasingly getting harder. Dr. Bryant's journey of self-discovery led him to review all his counseling sessions and embark on a coaching program to learn daily motivation and encouragement techniques. His commitment to personal growth and understanding is a testament to his resilience and determination. Driven by a deep-seated desire to help others, Dr. Bryant became a certified Life Coach, focusing on assisting soldiers and veterans facing similar obstacles. In a twist of fate, his journey of helping others also became a journey of self-discovery, fueling his hunger to understand and support others even more. Years of interpersonal data, additional training and degrees, and thousands of hours of research have led Dr. Bryant to dissect the current coaching practices and opened a new generation of awareness and empowerment similar to the teachings of Dr. Carl R. Rogers, PsyD. This book aims to illuminate the current state of life coaching. We hope you will identify the gaps and the need for an independent platform. Doing so will empower you to realize that you can achieve more if you know where to look. This book presents the induction of the MASTERY IN LIFE MODEL.

    Dedication

I want to dedicate this book to two inspirational people who assisted me in gaining the insight and awareness to understand what I needed to do beyond my present awareness.

Mr. Berry Fowler, founder of Fowler International Academy (FIA) of Professional Coaches, provided me with 1:1 training as my mentor and believed in me when I was in a mental state of doubt.

Carl R. Rogers (died 4 February 1987) founded the theoretical awareness of human potential. He believed in self-actualization and that each one of us can achieve our full potential. His awareness and courage guided me to develop the MASTERY IN LIFE METHOD™.

First, I want to thank you for selecting my book. It is an honor that you have the faith to explore the words on the pages based on a book title, a book that has taken me hundreds of hours to write and years of experience to build toward.

I have worked in consulting for almost two decades and have chosen to volunteer as a life, business, and mental health coach for the last decade.

Volunteering as a coach started as a mission to help my fellow military veterans who were challenged with returning home and managing their emotions. However, the more I understood the purpose, the more I realized I should be helping others experiencing challenges.

However, as I grew in this coaching field, I witnessed how individuals capitalized on their services to maintain clients. To me, I felt there was something that did not make sense, and I had an issue with that.

Over the years, I eventually developed a method of giving control back to the client and giving coaches a chance to improve their services. That was the beginning of the Mastery In Life Method™, a concept that evolved from psychologist Carl R. Rogers’ theory regarding human potential.

Therefore, as a bonus, this book will provide some insights about the MIL METHOD™, giving more details about what it means and how it can improve you or your coaching.

BUT FIRST … we need to start from the beginning.

    Introduction

In a society where external expectations and societal pressures abound, embarking on a journey of self-discovery is a radical act of commitment. It urges us to pause, turn our attention inward, and question the foundations on which we have built our lives. Through this courageous exploration, we can unearth our authentic selves, shed the limiting beliefs that have hindered us, and continuously strive to reach our full potential.

The journey to self-discovery is dynamic and flexible. It is an ongoing, ever-changing process of unfolding and becoming. It requires vulnerability, self-compassion, and the willingness to face our deepest fears and insecurities. However, the benefits of this journey are immeasurable: a deep sense of self-awareness, inner strength, and the ability to face life’s obstacles with tenacity and grace.

This book, Life Coaching Today, is more than just a compilation of theories or abstract concepts; it is a thorough guide to understanding how life coaching can improve one’s life. It recognizes the complexity and nuances of human experience while providing insights and practical tools to help you navigate the landscape of self-discovery with clarity and purpose.

The key idea is the power of taking ownership. Often, we let external forces control our lives, allowing circumstances, cultural standards, or others to dictate our decisions and shape our realities. By taking ownership, we reclaim our agency and become the masters of our destiny.

As you journey through these pages, you will be encouraged to delve into the intricate interplay between your mind, identity, and life experiences. You will explore how your thoughts and beliefs shape your perception of reality and how your past experiences have shaped your worldview. By deepening your understanding of these processes, you can unravel the barriers that have held you back and pave the way for lasting transformation, instilling a sense of hope and optimism. OH, WAIT … This is the essence of the Mastery In Life Method.

Modeled after the psychologist Carl R. Rogers, Mastery In Life (MIL) understands and focuses on the importance of people returning to the roots of their awareness and gaining their independence, thus taking control.

Mr. Rogers understood that therapy was personally centered and that we could manage our development. By recognizing our skills and functions, the actualization of who we are guides us to achieve whatever we set our minds toward. MIL has the necessary tools to provide that guidance without constant management from a third party.

The world of therapy, with its rich history and different methodologies, provides an incredible opportunity to delve into the depths of your psyche, recover from past traumas, and develop emotional resilience from Sigmund Freud’s pioneering work and the psychoanalytic traditions explored by Carl Rogers’ humanistic methods and the person-centered movement (Rogers, 1961). You will learn about the various therapeutic modalities and their potential to promote healing and self-discovery.

Coaching, on the other hand, provides a powerful opportunity for personal and professional development. As you delve into the growth of coaching, from its roots in ancient mentorship traditions to its modern iterations, you will discover how this dynamic discipline helps individuals unlock their full potential, find and pursue their dreams, and cultivate a growth mindset.

This road of self-discovery is collaborative; it frequently necessitates the direction and assistance of professionals and trustworthy allies. However, within these chapters, you will navigate the realms of therapy, coaching, and other personal improvement techniques, equipping you to discern the appropriate path for your unique needs and circumstances.

The Mastery In Life Method is about allowing you to understand what is necessary for you to achieve limits beyond your limits.

Whether you want to overcome personal obstacles, attain job goals, or live a more satisfying and honest life, coaching provides a supportive partnership that promotes self-discovery, accountability, and long-term growth.

However, self-discovery is acknowledged to extend far beyond therapy rooms and coaching sessions. It is a lifetime process that requires personal accountability, self-reflection, and dedication to ongoing improvement. These pages discuss ideas and exercises to promote self-awareness, clarity, and individual empowerment.

From the practical application of the ABCs of Clarity® to the examination of the Mastery In Life (MIL) Triangle®: a person will learn the toolset to assist in self-clarification. You will learn to manage the interaction of your ideas, emotions, and behaviors, developing the ability to break free from restrictive patterns and embrace a life of authenticity and purpose.

Furthermore, self-discovery is acknowledged as a non-linear, individualized journey. It recognizes the vast tapestry of human diversity, including the distinct cultural, societal, and personal contexts that shape each person’s experience. This will offer a framework to investigate your professional, relationship, health, or personal identity difficulties.

The Mastery In Life Method epitomizes a daring, challenging, and inspiring read about living an authentic life. It invites you to break away from limiting beliefs and stories that have held you captive and injects in you, through these pages, the courage, resilience, and compassion to finally script your story yourself.

You will travel along the path of self-discovery, aided by wisdom from diverse traditions and insights from modern psychology and neuroscience, together with reasons and practical, personally improving practices. You will be encouraged to question, reflect, and maintain a personal dialogue with the self while on your way to discovering your authentic self.

Remember that this journey is about appreciating the endless unfolding of your potential rather than arriving at a specific destination. It is about developing a lifelong commitment to personal growth, self-awareness, and the bravery to constantly redefine and rewrite your story.

Begin this transformative journey with open hearts and minds, prepared to face challenges, find inspiration, and ultimately achieve a deeper understanding and acceptance of our true selves.

    Chapter 1

    How Coaching

    Emerged as a Profession

The history of coaching dates to ancient traditions that valued mentorship, guidance, and personal growth. Throughout history, individuals have sought wisdom and direction from those with experience, knowledge, and insight. However, coaching as a distinct profession, with its methodologies and philosophies, is a relatively modern phenomenon that has evolved over the past few decades.

The areas of coaching’s emergence are intricate, from its roots in ancient mentorship traditions to its recognition as a vital personal and professional development tool.

The concept of mentorship has been woven into the fabric of human civilization for centuries. In ancient Greek philosophy, the Socratic method embodied the idea of a wise mentor guiding individuals through self-reflection and critical thinking (Plato, 2002).

Socrates engaged his students in dialogues designed to challenge their assumptions and stimulate intellectual growth. This mentorship approach laid the foundation for the idea that personal transformation can be facilitated through a supportive, questioning, and reflective relationship.

Similarly, in eastern traditions, the guru-disciple relationship in Hinduism (Vivekananda, 1999) and Buddhism (Suzuki, 1962) exemplified the
