Denise Wells

Denise has been reading since before she could talk. And to this day, escaping into a book is her go-to activity before anything else. She likes to write about sassy women and semi-flawed alpha-esque men (hard on the outside and just a little soft on the inside.) Denise’s female characters always have strong friendships, potty mouths, and like to drink—a lot.Denise is loyal to a fault, a bit too sarcastic, blindingly optimistic, and pretty freakin’ happy with life overall. If she couldn't be a writer, she'd be a singer in a classic rock band. Right after she learned to carry a tune. She has more purses than days in the month, an obsession with colored ink pens, and a slightly unhealthy bracelet habit.Home is in the Pacific Northwest where she lives with five Siberian Huskies and a husband (BW) who has the patience and tolerance of a saint. And, lest she forget, Denise also lives with too many to count characters inside her head, who will eventually have their stories told. For more about Denise visit her website at: www.DeniseWells.comOr follow her on any of the social media sites below.facebook.com/denisewellsauthortwitter.com/denisewellsinstagram.com/denisewellsauthoramazon.com/author/denisewellsbookbub.com/authors/denisewellsauthorgoodreads.com/denisewellspinterest.com/denisewellsauthor

Because sometimes even the wrong guy looks right under the mistletoe.

    prologue

    Holly

Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a situation where all you can think is, How in the hell did I get here? If so, you can totally relate to what I’m going through right now as I look into the steely gray eyes of my best guy-friend, Dash Mamet.

    Because he’s pissed.

    At me.

More so than I’ve ever seen him before. Mostly for something out of my control. Not that he’s listening to any of my explanations on how this happened. He just pulled me off my makeshift stage, ignoring the resulting cries from my new fans, and into this darkened hallway.

Holly Irene Taylor. He uses my full name, which is never good, and his voice is low but loud. In that way that lets me know he’s upset but still trying to be cool about it. What in the ever-loving-fuck are you doing here?

Well, I start, shifting uneasily on my fur-covered, faux-hooved feet.

And, he interrupts, what made you think this was a good idea?

    Well, Dre called me—

You’re going to start by blaming this on my sister?

My best girlfriend, Deirdre, is also Dash’s twin sister. No, but—

And is this a costume? What are you supposed to be? He points to the bit of fluff we pinned on my red sequin covered ass. Is that a tail?

    I’m a reindeer.

    A reindeer in short shorts?

The dress wasn’t long enough, the shorts are so you can’t see my butt. I pull at my tulle skirt willing it to lengthen.

Newsflash, Holly, everyone can see your butt! His face reddens to the color of my shorts. I don’t want these guys seeing you like this. He pulls off his flannel shirt and wraps it around me. Leaving him clad in a tight white T-shirt. I give myself a moment—okay, two moments—to ogle his beautifully muscled chest and arms before drowning in his scent as his clothes engulf me.

I love the way Dash smells. Like eucalyptus and pine mixed with one hundred percent grade-A man.

. . .breasts falling out all over the place. Dash is still talking while I fantasize about what it would be like to have him take me in his arms for real and—

    Wait.

My breasts aren’t falling out, I scoff. And even if they were, why do you care?

He sighs. Because, Holly, the last thing I need is to be fighting guys off of you tonight.

Pfft. You’ve never had to fight guys off me.

    Has he?

He looks at me like I’m missing the point. Look, tonight is about cutting loose with the guys. For Alex’s bachelor party. We’ve got burlesque dancers coming, I don’t know what kind of scheme you and Dre have cooked up here. But it’s not going to work.

There’s no scheme, I’m covering for Dre. Singing for—

We didn’t hire a singer; we hired a burlesque dancer. Even if we did hire a singer, I wouldn’t hire my sister. Whatever it is you’re doing here; I don’t need you doing it in front of a bunch of guys expecting a show. Thinking you’re the show just because you’re. . . He waves his hand at me like that explains everything.

    Because I’m what?

Throwing yourself at them on a fucking platter. He paces in the small space he’s dragged us to. Dash may be my best guy-friend, but that’s mostly because he’s Deirdre’s twin and she’s my bestie. He also likes to think he’s in charge of us and responsible for our safety and well-being. So, if you’re here looking for a date or something, this is definitely not the place.

Wow, you better watch out, Dash. I might start thinking you like me or something, I scoff.

His eyes flash with something like desire. But it can’t be desire because that idea is preposterous. He sees me as a friend, always has, always will.

His forehead travels down to meet mine as he closes his eyes and sighs again. His arms tighten around me, pulling me flush against him. I do like you, Holly.

    Oh!

My body comes alive at once. Every sense runs in overdrive—my heart races, skin warms, core tingles—as my entire being focuses on Dash. I sigh with happiness as everything rights in my world. Dash is touching me, and he likes me. He—

    Wait.

Does that mean he likes-me-likes-me, or just likes me like normal?

A chant breaks through the buzzing in my head, growing louder from the other room. Sounding something like—SHOW, SHOW, SHOW, SHOW, SHOW!—as if the crowd is demanding the show go on. I don’t blame them; I’d want to see the show I paid for too.

Oh, shit. Technically, I’m the show they paid for. Aren’t I? Except that room is more young guys, than seniors. None of whom want to do a sing-along with me. But that’s where I was wheeled to, and I made a promise to Dre.

I push away from Dash. I’ve got to get out there.

You’re not going out there dressed like that. He crosses his arms over his chest.

    We stand off.

    I debate what to do.

Go back out there, finish what I’m being paid for?

    Or stay here with
