    Chapter 1: The Festival's Fate

The crisp autumn air nipped at Jamie's nose as she scampered down the sidewalk, her plastic pumpkin bucket swinging in her hand. Trick-or-treating was her favorite part of Halloween, and she couldn't wait to fill her bucket with sugary treats. Her older brother Max trudged beside her, his costume - a reluctant ghost - billowing behind him.

Come on, Max! We haven't even hit the Thompsons' house yet, and my bucket is already half empty, Jamie said, glancing back at her brother.

Max rolled his eyes. That's because you've been shoving handfuls of candy in your mouth every time we stop. Slow down, will you? The night is young.

Jamie stuck her tongue out at him, then turned her attention back to the brightly decorated houses. As they approached the Thompsons' Victorian-style home, the sound of laughter and music spilled out from the open front door. Jamie eagerly followed Mrs. Thompson into the house, while Max reluctantly trailed behind. The interior was a spooky wonderland, with cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and carved pumpkins lining the hallway.

So, what's the big news, Mrs. Thompson? Jamie asked, her eyes wide with anticipation.

Mrs. Thompson's expression suddenly turned somber. Well, my dear, I'm afraid I have some rather distressing news. The town has decided to cancel the annual Halloween festival this year.

Jamie's heart sank. What? No, that can't be true! The Halloween festival is the best part of the whole year. Everyone in the town looks forward to it!

Max stepped forward, his brow furrowed. Why would they cancel it? I thought the festival was a big deal around here.

Mrs. Thompson sighed and gestured for them to follow her into the living room. It seems that attendance and community involvement have been dwindling over the past few years. The town council believes it's no longer worth the effort and expense to put on the festival.

Jamie felt a lump forming in her throat. The Halloween festival had been a cherished tradition in their town for
