About this ebook

Larry Eyler was a prolific American serial killer, who had killed more than twenty young men from 1982-84 in the Midwestern states (most of his victims were from Illinois, and Indiana). Most of his victims had been hitchhikers, gay men at bars, and male prostitutes. He would ply them with alcohol, and sedatives, and proposition them for sexual acts. Then, after transporting his victim to a secluded spot (like the abandoned farmhouse, his apartment, or Little's condo), Eyler would kill them in vicious ways. Most of his murders were stabbings, or mutilations – with some of his victims being dismembered, or eviscerated. Eyler had received the nickname 'Highway Murderer', because the majority of his victims were dumped along the Interstate Highway System, or in rural areas nearby.

    INTRODUCTION

Larry Eyler was a prolific American serial killer, who had killed more than twenty young men from 1982-84 in the Midwestern states (most of his victims were from Illinois, and Indiana). Most of his victims had been hitchhikers, gay men at bars, and male prostitutes. He would ply them with alcohol, and sedatives, and proposition them for sexual acts. Then, after transporting his victim to a secluded spot (like the abandoned farmhouse, his apartment, or Little’s condo), Eyler would kill them in vicious ways. Most of his murders were stabbings, or mutilations – with some of his victims being dismembered, or eviscerated. Eyler had received the nickname ‘Highway Murderer’, because the majority of his victims were dumped along the Interstate Highway System, or in rural areas nearby. He would always throw away any of his victim’s ID cards.

He didn’t always choose gay victims; some of them were straight hitchhikers, or straight sex workers who had mostly male clientele. Eyler’s murders were not sexually driven. Although he would often proposition his clients, he never actually had sex with them. He was described as a ‘rage killer’, because he’d become so infuriated by his partner’s infidelity, that he’d go on a rampage, taking his extreme anger out on the innocent young men.

Serial killer Larry Eyler, who was responsible for more than twenty murders during the early 1980’s.

    Who Was Larry Eyler?

Larry Eyler was born on December 21, 1952, in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He’d been the son of George Eyler, and Shirley Kennedy. He’d been the youngest of four children. Eyler had had a tumultuous childhood. His father had been an alcoholic, who was physically and emotionally abusive towards his wife, Shirley, and his four kids. The couple eventually divorced in 1955, when Eyler was three years old. Shirley worked multiple jobs – two days a week as a waitress, working in a bar on weekends, as well as a factory job on weekdays. Despite her long hours, she was barely able to financially support her four young kids.

Eyler and his older sister were often put into the care of babysitters, or foster homes. There were times where the oldest sibling (aged ten), would be put in charge of all the young kids. When in foster care, Shirley would visit her two youngest children – which Eyler later said that the constant separations and reunions in his family had brought them closer.

In 1957, Shirley remarried – although their marriage only lasted for one year. Her third marriage, in 1960, lasted for four years, before divorcing yet again. She married again in 1972. The first two stepfathers that Eyler had were similar to his birth father – abusive alcoholics. One of the stepfathers would hold Eyler’s head under scalding water as a form of punishment.

Larry Eyler attended St. Joseph School, in Lebanon, Indiana. His teachers saw him as a quiet boy, with only a few friends. He was considered likeable by his teachers. Eyler was quite tall for his age, and often played sports. However, he was bullied because his mother was divorced, and because he came from a poor background. Eyler’s older sister, Theresa, often went after her brother’s bullies.

As he grew older, Eyler started to exhibit a stubborn streak, and ‘erratic behaviour’. In 1963, his mother placed Eyler in a home for unruly boys. He found the experience quite traumatizing, and he begged his mother to let him return home. After a few weeks, Eyler completed a series of psychological tests, that showed he was of average intelligence. The tests showed that he was severely insecure, and had extreme separation, and abandonment issues.

The staff members who evaluated Eyler, determined that his issues stemmed from his home life. They had Eyler sent to a Catholic boys’ home, in Fort Wayne. He stayed there for six months, before finally returning home with his mother.

In his early teens, Larry Eyler realized that he was gay. He was open about his sexuality, although he struggled with internalized homophobia, and self-hatred. While attending South Putnam high school, Eyler dated a few girls, though he was never physical with them. He had admitted to a few of his close friends
