PREFACE
If you’re reading this book, it’s likely that you or someone close to you has faced the intense, life-altering impact of a stroke. The initial relief of survival often masks the complex and turbulent journey that lies ahead. While there may be joy in knowing your loved one has pulled through, few are truly prepared for the reality of what comes next.
Your loved one has cleared the first hurdle by surviving, but now the real challenge begins—a challenge that will test everyone’s resilience and adaptability. Life as you once knew it will change dramatically, opening up a future that neither you nor your family could ever have anticipated. With no manual to guide you through these turbulent waters, you’ll find yourselves improvising, learning with each unexpected twist and turn.
The author, himself a stroke survivor, experienced a devastating brainstem haemorrhage in the pons region and was given just a 2% chance of surviving those critical early hours. From that day forward, his family’s world was turned upside down in ways they could never have imagined. No one was prepared for the overwhelming range of emotions that would emerge. As brain cells began to die from a lack of oxygen, his behaviour and personality began to shift, posing some of the most difficult adjustments for both him and his family.
This book provides insight and understanding into the journey that follows a stroke—a journey that may last months or even years. It is a resource to help you prepare for the complex path ahead.
