Chapter 1: Call from the Past
Ricardo Montalvo always knew that there were cases that would never be solved. Some mysteries, no matter how solid they seemed in evidence, had that almost ethereal quality, escaping through the fingers, like smoke under the light of a lamp in an empty room. But something about that cold morning, when mist covered the streets of Porto Esperança, told him that his past, in some way, was about to return.
His phone rang early. It was Adriana, an old college friend, now a successful lawyer who defended influential families in the city. Ricardo , we need to talk. I have a case for you, but I don’t want to discuss it over the phone. It’s urgent.
The tension in her voice made Ricardo hold his breath for a second. Adriana was rarely emotional or over the top; her choice of words was always precise and calculated.
Still half asleep, Ricardo put on his wool coat, adjusted the hat he always wore on days like this, and left to meet Adriana. On the way, memories of past cases mixed with expectations of a new mystery. After a quick walk, he met 2
Adriana in a discreet café. She had a serious expression and slightly restless eyes.
Do you remember Dr. Luis Montenegro?
she asked, almost as if testing someone's memory. Ricardo nodded immediately. Montenegro was a renowned historian, known for his meticulous research and for not being intimidated by exposing secrets that many would rather bury. He disappeared,
she added in a whisper.
Ricardo leaned forward. Montenegro had been involved in a case that the detective himself had investigated years ago. It was a web of crime and corruption that had seemed inconclusive at the time. Now, Montenegro had disappeared under strange circumstances, and everything seemed connected in a disturbing way. He was working on a new project, something that apparently bothered influential people,
Adriana said.
Feeling the weight of responsibility, Ricardo decided to begin his investigation through the Montenegro office.
After saying goodbye to Adriana, who wished him luck, he left for the location. When he arrived at the old building, he noticed that it had been recently searched; Torn papers on the floor, misaligned shelves and open drawers 3
showed that someone had been there, looking for something important.
On the table, under a pile of partially burned documents, he found a handwritten note from Montenegro: The past always returns. The truth cannot be buried.
The phrase echoed in Ricardo's mind, as it seemed made for him. The familiarity of that enigma reminded him of his first years as a researcher and the frustrated investigations that made him doubt his own potential.
Searching the office, Ricardo found a notebook with detailed notes. The names mentioned there were of prominent figures in Porto Esperança – businessmen, politicians, magistrates. Montenegro seemed to have discovered something that would shake the city. But where did he go?
– Ricardo wondered, as he leafed through the notebook.
Montenegro’s office was like a time capsule, a mix of history and mystery. Every object in the room seemed to have a story and a purpose, including a map of Porto Esperança marked in red. One of the markers was in a remote area of the city, where old industrial buildings had been abandoned decades ago. Ricardo wrote down the 4
location, thinking it would be a starting point for finding answers.
Ricardo left the office with mixed feelings. The reunion with a case linked to his past disturbed him, but at the same time it rekindled that spark of determination. Back in his office, he reviewed the notes he found and thought about the consequences of moving forward. If Montenegro was right, he had stumbled upon something that influential people were willing to protect at any cost.
Ricardo knew he had only begun to unravel the enigma.
The investigation promised to be dangerous and, perhaps, lonely. But he had a clear goal: to find out what Montenegro found and why it posed such a threat. At the end of the night, Ricardo wrote a name on his list of suspects, reminding himself that the past is not something that can be left behind so easily.
This time, I’m going to go all the way,
he muttered to himself before turning off the lights and closing the office door.

Chapter 2: The First Clue
The next morning dawned covered in dense fog, a silent blanket that seemed to hide the streets of Porto Esperança. Ricardo Montalvo was up before sunrise, reviewing the notes from the previous day. There was something strange about Dr. Montenegro's case—
something that escaped the common logic of disappearances.
Wearing his heavy coat and his usual hat, he walked to the old building where Montenegro worked. The notes and documents he had found in the office the night before kept coming back to his mind. Among the burned papers and
