Shadow Wood - Lillian Van Landschoot

There once was a girl named Faith. Faith was no ordinary girl. She liked to play outside, and she liked to go on adventures even though they were on the same path every time. People say she was different or weird or just strange, but that is not what this story is about. This story is about the adventure she took through the woods.

Faith lived in a small cottage in the middle of a cornfield. She didn’t have a TV, phone, or internet. Her mom was the only person in her life. Her mom was a very fearful person after Faith’s dad died. Faith’s dad died when she was only three. Faith had not known her dad very well since she was so little. Her mother told her he had died in a fatal car accident. So it had just been Faith and her mom for the past ten years.

Her mom didn’t let Faith leave the house except for when she was going to school. Her mom even waited in the parking lot all day to make sure Faith was safe, even though behind the school’s closed doors Faith was being bullied by other girls in her school because of the way her mom acted. Although her mom’s helicopter-parent actions were annoying, it was all she knew.

But one day Faith’s mom found out some developers were wanting to develop the land they lived on and build a modern neighborhood around their house. Faith’s mom decided that it would be safer for them to move. Faith was heartbroken and didn’t want to move at all because she didn’t want to leave the one place that felt like home. Her mom, on the other hand, was excited to move, since crowds and strangers scared her.

The next day Faith was in her room packing. She grabbed her paintings she made when she was younger off the walls, rolled up her LED lights that lined her closet, and pulled the stars off her ceiling in her bedroom, when her mom came in and said, I found a house in the middle of the woods; the rent is only ten dollars a month! I think it will be nice there. I can homeschool you and you will never have to be bullied again. It can just be the two of us forever! I do have a list of rules for you to follow. The most important one is no going outside. There are things that lurk in the shadows, and I don’t want you to get hurt.

Tears started to swell up in Faith’s eyes, as she would never be alone. Faith told her mom, I am willing to move and do the homeschool thing and follow all your silly rules except, I want to be allowed to go outside.

Her mother’s face turned red, and she was furious. She said, You are to always obey my rules, all the time, and do whatever I tell you. No questions asked. I made all these rules to protect you and especially now that we are moving to the woods, it’s especially important you follow my rules.

Faith said, That’s so stupid, nothing is out there that will hurt me, and you can’t protect me forever!

Faith’s mom yelled back, Don’t you backtalk me or use that language in my house! Faith’s mom stormed out of the room and went into the kitchen.

The next morning, Faith woke up to the barren white walls of her empty bedroom. As Faith climbed out of bed, tears started to fill her eyes. She knew that this day would be awful and sad. Then she heard her mom yell, FAITH! PUT ALL THE LAST BOXES INTO THE CAR AND COME OUT FOR BREAKFAST!

She didn’t answer because the last thing she wanted to do was put her stuff in the car and come out for her final breakfast in the house she grew up in and made memories in. But Faith knew there would be no way she could change her mom’s mind, so she picked up the few boxes she had and walked them out to the car. After she was done, she went back inside and sat down. Her mom had made her favorite breakfast, which consisted of pancakes, bacon, and French toast. They ate in silence, both staring off into space thinking about the move, the only difference between Faith and her mother was that Faith was dreading the move. The only thing she was excited about was the four-hour drive because she wanted to see the beautiful trees, mountains, crystal-clear rivers, and see the tall skyscrapers that would fill the cities they might pass.

Finally, when they were done eating, they walked out to the front of the house and said their goodbyes to their old home. They grabbed the last boxes that were on the front porch and put them inside of the car. Faith and her mom then got in the car and put on their seatbelts. Faith’s mom then said, Ready to go? Faith then slowly turned her head toward her mom and glared, then gradually turned her head away again. They then drove away from their house and the cornfield.

As soon as the cornfield was no longer in sight, Faith broke down in tears. Her mom was quiet the entire time Faith was crying into her lilac sweatshirt, leaving tearstains on the wrists. Faith was so sad, and she felt so lonely since her mom was doing and saying nothing to comfort her. When she was done crying, she rolled down the window and looked out. She saw green trees, blue skies, cars speeding by, and the feeling of freedom brushed through her silky, blonde hair as the wind dried the tears on her face, and the feeling of air on her small pale hand gliding along the breeze, as
