About this ebook

It’s All Hallows’ Eve and Lyra Jacobs ventures out into the bayou as she always does—to tend the graves of those gone before her and to honor the lost souls of her great family. The derelict site is usually undisturbed, but tonight she finds herself accosted by three men with malintent on their minds.

Mercifully Lyra is not without a champion. A great stone gargoyle guarding the little graveyard awakens, coming to life upon hearing her pleas.
Grateful for her salvation, she feels compelled to repay her life debt ... but Lyra may find herself burdened with more than she bargained for when the ancient creature expresses his true gothic desires!

    Chapter One

Colorful leaves crunch satisfyingly under my boots, adding to the natural, nocturnal music of the cool October evening. Crickets chirp in chorus, a lone wolf howls in the distance, and the sound of trickling water fills the air. The bayou is as beautiful as it is peaceful, though danger lurks beneath the surface. Seemingly sleepy alligators rest in the shallow waterways, their gleaming reptilian eyes peeking just above the ripples, ever ready for the chance to snap up the unwary and foolish.

Fireflies dance between the moss-laden trees and the rich aroma of damp earth permeates my every breath. The moon is still rising, taking her place among the first stars of the night like the crown jewel against the canvas of the heavens. With a deep sigh, I smile to myself. There really is nowhere else I’d rather be on All Hallows’ Eve. The bayou is in my blood, and I feel connected to the land here in a way I can’t quite put into words.

If there’s anything I’ve learned in life, it’s that we can only understand one another through our shared experiences, and fortunately for most they have not had to endure the trials my people have. As such, like the rest of mankind, my dreams and views of the world are colored by my personal experiences and those of my ancestors handed down over generations.

My forebears were brought here as slaves from Africa, and it was upon this land—in the breathtaking State of Louisiana—that we lived, toiled, and eventually found our freedom. Some might prefer to run from the horrors of the past, and while I understand that primal urge, I feel the stories of my ancestors are mine and I am proud of who I am. I refuse to run. I’ve always believed that to deny our pain is to deny our very humanity. Pain, struggle, and love are the foundations upon which we all grow, after all. It’s the very water of life.

With the souls of the past in mind, I carefully make my way through the lush landscape, following a seldomly trodden path deeper into the darkness of the gloam. I don’t know anyone else locally who visits the small and unkempt graveyard I frequent every Halloween. I come on a private, solo pilgrimage to place flowers and light candles for those who were laid to rest there. Not all those whose bones lie buried in the overgrown site found peace in their lifetimes. And as their distant kin who now has the privilege of enjoying the many freedoms of the modern age, I feel it only right to take a moment to remember and honor them for their
