In Defense of Sasquatch
Introduction
Sasquatch (more commonly known as Bigfoot to the American audience) is often given the scientific classification of Gigantopithecus—an extinct species of ape thought to roam Asia as recently as 300,000 years ago. One report notes that the remains of Gigantopithecus were first discovered in 1935 when paleontologist G.H. von Koenigswald discovered a yellowish molar among the ‘dragon bones’ for sale in a Hong Kong pharmacy.
Thought to possess healing power, ancient fossils such as those belonging to Gigantopithecus had been ground into powders for generations, limiting the already near-scant evidence of their existence.
Today, Sasquatch, much like his Gigantopithecus relatives, faces a similar challenge. He continues to be placed among the dragon bones, relegated to legend, and given no chance at existence. The scientific community has long made a monkey of Sasquatch, offering no credence to amateur claims. Treating evidence as if it was nothing more than sideshow or spectacle, discounting every snapped photograph and plastered print as little more than a poorly produced hoax. However, this second-class scientific treatment is not without reason, and even the staunchest Sasquatch hunter will admit that hoaxes far outweigh definitive proof.
The Sasquatch community’s attempt to disassociate itself with these hoaxes has proved only marginally successful. And even after combating the disbelievers, they are still left to deal with the equally troublesome believers—many of whom can be heard bellowing from every blog post, claiming Sasquatch to be an alien life form, or a shape shifter, or the second-coming of Christ.
Author Joshua Blu Buhs confirms this assault on the creature’s credibility, noting that the "inability to separate Sasquatchery from fringe fields, combined with the prevalence of hoaxes and the beast’s penchant for appearing in the National Enquirer, guaranteed that Bigfoot would not be taken seriously by mainstream society, not by scientists, and not by the mass media."
This defense is not to prove the existence of Sasquatch,
