    About the Author

    Prologue

Prior to my divorce in 2004, I called up a friend named Jeff, who lived in Missouri. We talked about old times. And during the course of the conversation, I opened my heart to Jeff. I said, "Jeff, I want to serve God. The problem is, I know I have a lot to work on myself. I have a lot flaws. There are things that I must get fixed in my life before I can serve Him.

"So, what you are telling me…is…you…have to get perfect…before God…can use you in His kingdom. Is that what I am hearing you say?"

Jeff always had the perfect pauses to put things into perspective. He was a masterful salesperson who knew every technique for making a person think about what they were really saying and if it was in fact logical or coherent. That is much of selling a product, the idea of getting someone to think about the logical extreme.

I was caught like a deer in the headlights. Uh…uh…uh, yes, I guess that is what I am saying. I surrendered in embarrassment as I thought it through. I would not and could not ever be perfect, but that was my rationale. It was absurd.

Well, that is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard come across your lips buddy! he said rather smugly. Jeff was not afraid to call a spade a dirty old shovel.

I bring this conversation up to inoculate you, the reader, to the once-ridiculous thought process that I had, which may cripple you the same had I not brought this to your attention aforehand. Please do not think for an instance that using the argument that you must wait for perfection to service God is a legitimate defense for procrastination. This is simply hogwash. In fact, as you search the Bible from Abraham to Paul, you will never find a perfect servant free from sin. You are no different, and so I implore you to press on regardless of your sin or shortcomings. Had I waited to be perfect, I would have never written two books or fathered eleven additional children.

We are all a work in progress and thankful for the grace that saves us. Take your steps to help others in humility, knowing God has let you proceed despite your flaws yet in confidence, knowing His kingdom is better for your efforts. You may have more or less mistakes in your past or present than myself. This isn't a game of casting guilt. Satan is the accuser of the brethren. Let us be an encourager of the brethren in all circumstances. In plain terms, we all suck without the special cloak of Yeshua wrapped around us. As others see good or great in us, then let it be deferred to the image of Yeshua. When we are weak, let us depend carefully on the arms of Him who knows our weakness and strength.

I hope, as you read these words, you will not become frightened to read on but rather encouraged to seek the guidance of my loving instruction in the pages that follow.

Bless you for taking time to read this book!

    Chapter 1

    Groceries

When you pray to God, you must be precise in your prayer! the pastor boldly professed from the pulpit. Tell God exactly what your need is. If you need a truck with a hitch, then tell him. If it needs to have a V8 engine, then tell him. If you need $345 to meet your electric bill that is past due, then tell him.

Brother Mac was a Southern Baptist pastor who prayed in King James English and sweated profusely while preaching in this tiny un-air-conditioned brick church.

I lay on the pew, chewing Doublemint gum, watching my mother wave a church bulletin quickly while beads of sweat rolled off her nose. She patted my leg like a mom does to console an anxious youngster who doesn't have the patience to get through a Sunday night sermon in ninety-degree heat.

Mom and I arrived home around 8:00 p.m., and Mom said to me, Michael, we are going to do exactly what Brother Mac said to do. Come over here and help me with this list.

Because of circumstances out of my mother's control, we were without food. Literally, the cupboards were bare, and the fridge was empty. We were in a bad place. Mom began to write a grocery list in her perfect cursive penmanship. She and I composed a list of probably eighty to one hundred items we needed. It's easy to think of a
