    ONE

I t started as any normal day. I woke up at 7:30 a.m. and headed downstairs to get my coffee and start my day. It was a beautiful Saturday morning. The sun was shining, and I felt unusually rested. For once, I felt as though I’d slept well. I started the coffee pot, grabbed my favorite mug, and then let my two precious fur babies—Jake, a big Collie and Australian mix, and Izzy, my tiny little Teacup Yorkie—out for their morning routine. They truly were the best dogs in the world. Jake was my shadow; he never left my side. Izzy, who was the more adventurous of the two, was full of life and always getting into mischief. But both were also very loving and had developed such a unique bond with each other. They were certainly my entertainment most days.

After the dogs were finished with their outside morning routine, I let them back in and gave them their breakfast. While they were eating, I plopped down on my gigantic ultrasoft and cozy sofa, grabbed my fleece blanket, sipped on my coffee, and read the news on my phone. There was nothing particularly interesting to read, so I put my phone down and just sat peacefully, staring out of the window while sipping my coffee. My head was immediately flooded with all sorts of thoughts. Should I clean the house today? Should I take a drive with the dogs? Should I go to the grocery store and perhaps try a new recipe? But suddenly all those thoughts were quickly interrupted by the ringing of my doorbell. By this time, it was only eight in the morning. Who could possibly be at my door? Luckily, I’d at least remembered to put my robe on before making my way downstairs earlier. I thought, Oh no, I have no makeup on, and my hair is a complete mess. I quietly crept to the front door and peeked through the peephole to see who was there. To my surprise, I saw no one. I paused for a minute and thought, Did I really hear the doorbell ring? So, I quietly approached the peephole once more, and again no one was there. I decided to open the door. I looked around, and again no one was around. The neighbors were not out yet, and no cars were driving on the street. Everything was quiet, and there was not a soul in sight. I thought, Perhaps I didn’t hear the doorbell after all. Maybe it was something else that I heard. As I was closing the door, something caught my eye on my front door mat. It was a gold-colored envelope. If it weren’t for the sun shining on the envelope so brightly, which made it sparkle like gold, it probably wouldn’t have gained my attention at all.

I opened the door a bit more, bent down, and grabbed it. It was beautiful. The texture of the envelope was not familiar, and the writing was not familiar either. It had beautiful letters of red perfectly written, and I could tell it was written by hand and not printed or typed. I stared at it for a few moments in complete silence, and when I was about to open it, my phone rang. I was so startled that I dropped the envelope on the floor. Fumbling to answer my phone, I watched the envelope slide under the foyer table near the front door. I quickly answered my phone and heard the familiar panicked voice that I had been used to hearing for many years now.

Hello, Rebecca, I said. You are calling quite early on a Saturday morning. What’s up?

Clara, she said in her sweet and frantic voice, I need a favor.

    OK, what’s the favor?

I booked a cabin to get away to finish writing the last few chapters of my book, but I have a family emergency, and I can’t go.

I could tell her voice was starting to change into more of a quiver, so I quickly jumped in and said, What can I do for you? You name it, and I will help you. But first I need to know you are OK.

Yes, she said. I am OK, but I must leave today to head back home to Georgia. My mom has fallen ill, and I need to get to her as soon as I can.

Of course. What is the favor you need?

"The cabin I booked … well, they won’t refund the money, and I don’t want to waste all the money on a cabin that I can’t use, so I want you to go. I booked it for a week, a Sunday through Sunday rental. You will love it. I will email you now all the details. It’s only a two-hour drive away, and
