About this ebook

In this book, the author, Ibn Rajab (Allah have mercy on him), sets out to explain the advice given by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him): 'Protect Allah and He will protect you...'

Abdu'l-Qadir al-Jilani (Allah have mercy on him) said that every believer should consider this hadith to be a mirror to their heart, an axiom, a shelter, and a topic of conversation. He further suggested that believers should act in accordance with it in all times of motion and stillness, with the aim of being saved in this world and in the Hereafter.

This is an excellent book which requires repeated reading in order to fully comprehend the profound wisdom it contains.

How to Win Allah’s Help and His Protection - Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali

    Introduction

In the Name of Allaah , the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

All praise belongs to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds.

Pure and blessed praise be to Him such as our Lord loves and accepts.

A praise which behoves the nobility of His Face and accords with His Magnificence.

May the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon Muhammad, the Unlettered Prophet, his family and his Companions.

Imam Ahmad relates the hadith of Hanash al-Sana'ani, on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas who said: One day when I was sitting [riding on the same mount] behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he said to me: O young man! Shall I not teach you some words by which Allaah will enable you to benefit?

    I replied: Of course!.

He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"Safeuard (Be mindful of) Allaah and He will safeguard you.

Safeguard Allaah and you will find Him before you.

Know Allaah in ease and He will know you in difficulty.

    When you ask, ask Allaah.

When you seek help, seek help from Allaah.

The pen is lifted and the pages are dried.

If all the creatures came together to try to benefit you through something that Allaah has not ordained, they would not be able to achieve it.

And if they joined together to harm you through something that Allaah has not decreed, they would not be able to achieve it.

Know that immense good lies in patiently enduring what you hate, that victory comes with patience, that relief comes with distress, and that ease accompanies difficulty."

This hadith contains advice of great importance and universal principles which deal with the greatest and noblest aspects of this religion.

So much so that Imam Abu al-Faraj (Allaah have mercy on him) said in his work Sayd al-Khatir: I contemplated on this hadith and it struck me with wonder. I was so stunned that I almost became dizzy.

He then said: The ignorance that reigns on the subject of this hadith and the resulting lack of understanding are truly distressing!

Chapter 1: Being mindful of Allaah

The words of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): Safeguard (Be mindful of) Allaah and He will Safeguard you, means: to Safeguard (being mindful of) the limits of Allaah, His rights, His orders and His prohibitions.

All these elements are Safeguarded by respecting His orders with compliance, His prohibitions with abandonment, His limits by not crossing them and not transgressing them.

So, this phrase encompasses the fulfillment of all obligations and the abandonment of all prohibitions.

This is like what is mentioned in the hadith of Abu Tha'labah on the authority of which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"Allaah has prescribed obligations for you, do not neglect them.

He has forbidden you certain things, do not break His prohibitions.

He has set limits for you, do not transgress them."

All of the above is included in the term: Safeguarding the limits of Allaah.

This is taken as it is in the Word of Allaah (approximate translation of the meanings):

Those who Safeguard the limits of Allaah. (Surah 9:Tawbah, verse 112.)

This is what has been promised to you [and]; it is for every person full of repentance and heedful [of divine orders] who fears the Most Merciful although he does not see Him, and who comes [to Him] with a heart inclined to obedience. (Surah 50: Qaf, verses 32-33.)

The term heedful in this verse has been explained by the following meaning: one who Safeguards the commandments of Allaah.

Another meaning was also given: one whose concern for his sins leads him to repent and renounce them.

The verse encompasses these two meanings.

Furthermore, all those who Safeguard and follow Allaah's legacy left to His servants come within the scope of this verse.

All these meanings revolve around the same fundamental meaning.

Thus, the advice he (peace be upon him) gives to Ibn ‘Abbas regarding safeguarding Allaah encompasses everything previously mentioned.

    To Safeguard the prayers

Among the most important things to Safeguard are  the five daily prayers.

Allaah, the Most High, said: Safeguard the prayers, especially the middle prayer. (Surah 2: al-Baqarah, verse 238)

...those who Safeguard their prayer. (Surah 70: al-Ma’arij, verse 34)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever Safeguards them, Allaah promises him entry into Paradise.

In another hadith: He who Safeguards them will receive light, proof and deliverance on the Day of Resurrection.

    Safeguarding the purification

The same thing applies to purification, because it is the key to prayer.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: No one Safeguards ablution except a believer.

Indeed, the servant can very well cancel his state of purification without even realizing it.

Therefore, safeguarding the state of ablution for prayer is proof that faith has become firmly anchored in the heart.

    Safeguarding of the oaths

Oaths are a part of what Allaah has ordered a person to Safeguard.

Mentioning the atonement for the breaking of oaths, He said:

This is the atonement for your oaths, when you have sworn them. And keep your oaths. (Surah 5: al-Ma’isdah, verse 85)

    People frequently make oaths.

The consequences of not keeping them (that is breaking them) vary. Sometimes it is the expiation for the breaking of oaths that is required. Other times, a more severe atonement is due. Still other times it requires divorce or similar things.

Faith has entered the heart of him who takes care of his oaths.

The Pious Predecessors (the Salaf) safeguarded their oaths carefully. Some among them would never take an oath by Allaah. Others were so cautious that they offered atonement for oaths they thought they might have broken.

Imam Ahmad (Allaah have mercy on him), on his deathbed, ordered that atonement for breaking an oath be given, saying: I think I have broken an oath that I had made.

It is narrated that when [the Prophet] Job (Ayyub - peace be upon him) passed after two people swearing by Allaah, he went and made atonement (give expiation) on their behalf lest they commit a sin without realizing it. This is why, when he took an oath to whip his wife a hundred times, Allaah offered him a facility (flexibility), because he safeguarded his oaths as well as those of others. Scholars have differed as to whether this facility applies to other than Prophet Job (peace be upon him).

Yazid ibn Abi Habib said: It has come to me that, among the Throne Bearers, there is one whose eyes cry tears that flow like the rivers. When he raises his head, he says: Glory to You, You are not feared as You deserve. Allaah then says: Yet those who swear falsely in My Name do not know this!

A severe warning has been reported regarding taking of false oaths. Frequent swearing in the Name of Allaah or false swearing in His Name comes from ignorance of Allaah and lack of reverence in the heart.

Safeguarding of the head and the stomach

Believers must Safeguard their head and their stomach.

Ibn Mas'ud reports that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: True modesty before Allaah consists in safeguarding the head and what it retains and the belly and what it contains.

Safeguarding the head and what it retains includes safeguarding the ears, eyes and tongue from falling into the forbidden.

Protecting the belly and what it contains includes safeguarding the heart against persisting in what is forbidden.

Allaah has mentioned all this in His Saying: Hearing, sight and heart: concerning all these, verily, they will be questioned. (Surah 17: al-Isra verse 36)

Safeguarding the belly and all that
