The Terror at Love Lake - Joey Powell

A few things before we start …

Hi there. I'm the Owner & Operator of Mad Axe Media, a publisher of dark genre fiction and 90s nostalgia horror. I'm also the writer of the short piece you're about to read, as well as the author of the novel Nightmares From the Gray and the forthcoming novella Squirming All the Way Up (2025).

I've included at the end of this chapbook a guide to all of the upcoming publications from Mad Axe Media through the end of 2025. If you're into dark and twisted stories, flip over to learn about Hiding Lies by Stephanie Rose. Interested in the dangers of tech? JK-LOL by Patrick Barb is for you. Is religious horror your thing? J.V. Gachs has you covered with Unholy. And if you're into serial killer psychology, prepare yourself for Son of a Serial Killer by Andrew Adams.

On the lighter side, we have five upcoming titles in the Totally Freaked! line of books, each involving standalone stories of YA 90s nostalgia horror that pay homage to such greats as Stine and Pike.

I truly hope you're as excited to read these works as I am to share them with the world.

I'd like to thank Tiffany Koplin from Indie Book Boxes and Books of Horror for being an all-around amazing ambassador for indie horror fiction. She's the hero we need, though I'm not sure we deserve.

Thank you to Isaac Nightingale and Julie Hiner for beta reading The Terror at Love Lake. They're both incredible horror authors and I'm lucky to be both a fan and a friend of each.

I would also like to thank the Internet for confirming that pepper spray was made with flammable liquid in the 80s. You'll understand soon enough …

And thank you, the reader, for reading. Give me a shout of Instagram @wowcooljoeywrites if you'd like.

    The Blood Moon Murders

    (Transcript)

Hello, freaks. This is Donny Roth, and you’re listening to the Freaky Local Legends podcast, where we break down the most gruesome, insane, and unexplainable things that have happened in the most unexpected places.

Today’s episode is very near and dear to my heart as it details an event that occured right here in my backyard. Today we are talking about the Blood Moon Murders at Love Lake. Quite the oxymoron, indeed.

The year is 1981. We’re at the tail end of summer in Echo Ridge, a quaint rural town located in the heart of North Carolina. A place with a large body of water on the outskirts of town, surrounded by lake houses only the old money families could afford. Since they often remained vacant, teens would find their way into the small community and, well … do what teenagers
