EMMA
In the hospital cafeteria, the protagonist's best friend sent her a link to a black Reddit thread discussing the Am I the Asshole
thread. The girl read the thread and realized that her ex-boyfriends were happy. She asked her friend Maddy about the billboard and how many weddings he had to be in. She decided to ask Justin, who had a different handle, just_in_267.
The girl sent a message to Justin, asking him if he was a reporter trying to figure out her identity. Justin replied, stating that he thought she was an undercover cop trying to figure out her identity. The girl explained that she is not a reporter and that he would see if he matched with her on Tinder.
Maddy asked her to take a picture of herself, thinking it might be a serial killer. She explained that it's no different than what he would see if he matched with her on Tinder and they would be in Hawaii in a few weeks. He's in Minnesota. Even if he could figure out who she is, he wouldn't track her down.
The girl was in scrubs and sent the picture to Maddy. Justin asked her how many times she has been catfished by reporters and how many times she has been catfished this week. She replied that she had only been asked once to be in a wedding for someone who benefited from her streak.
The girl laughed and read the text out loud to Maddy, who asked if pictures or it didn't happen.
The narrator and her friend Maddy are discussing a potential suspect, Justin, who they believe is a man with a sense of humor. They find a picture of Justin on Instagram, which they share with their friend. The woman suggests that the FBI should hire more women to investigate Justin's online behavior, as it would help them pass the vibe check.
The woman then shares a link to a photo of Justin on his Instagram account, which they both find cute and funny. They also discuss the dog, which they find to be a rescue dog, and the billboard he has posted. The woman explains that the dog trusts Justin and that the billboard is a green flag for him.
The woman then looks at the room, which is filled with a grinning, bearded middle-aged man dressed like a king, holding a plunger over a clogged toilet. She notes that the closer the bed is to the floor, the worse humans are. The woman also mentions that she requires bedroom photos before meeting someone, as sleeping bags have floor energy.
The woman zooms around the room, finding Justin's bed made with a beige duvet and a neat desk with an elaborate computer set up on it. She expresses her frustration with the idea that Justin is a man with a sense of humor and that the FBI should hire more women to investigate Justin's online behavior.
A woman named Chad finds a man named Justin Dahl, a software engineer, in her apartment. She finds his family, including a teenage boy, a girl, and a sleeping girl. She finds Justin's father died unexpectedly at the age of 45 and is following him on Instagram. Chad and her mother are amused by Justin's J-name and decide to continue surveillance.
After dinner, Chad receives a DM from Justin, who sends him a picture of himself holding a dog. Chad explains that Justin is not a Beetlejuice character and that he changed his name on Reddit to Faith. Chad is disappointed to hear that Justin is internet famous for being an asshole. Chad also mentions that Justin buys a plant at every new city and leaves it with someone. Chad likes to garden but moves too much for it.
Justin explains that reporters are trying to figure out Chad's secret identity because everyone wants to know who the guy who can guarantee a happy ever after is. Chad is surprised that Justin's DMs are off the hook, as he only answered because Chad mentioned the same thing happening to him.
Chad has another twelve-hour shift tomorrow, and Chad is happy to have a conversation with Justin.
JUSTIN
The narrator visits Brad and Benny at a restaurant, where they discuss their limited lunch breaks and Brad's dewormer. They mention Faith, who has been dragging his ass on the carpet, and Brad, a general manager at Trader Joe's, misses having another human to talk to. The narrator mentions the viral Reddit trend that has been nonstop all week, and how they have had a few girls ask if they would date them and break up with them so they can find their soulmate.
Brad smirks at this, but the narrator admits that they are both assholes to each other. They have two hundred messages right now, and they only want to date me to break up with me. The narrator is amused by the idea of someone cool in there dating him, but Brad denies it.
The narrator mentions meeting a nurse who seems to have the same luck charm as the narrator. Brad suggests that if they date each other, they will both find their soulmates when they break up. The narrator is serious about this idea, but the narrator doesn't text her today. He is getting tired of Brad being single all the time and thinks he is messing up the ratio.
The narrator takes a bite of their favorite appetizer platter, which includes wings and burgers.
Benny and Brad are in serious relationships, and they are planning to go hiking together in October. The protagonist, who is getting burnt out of dating, is considering asking Jane, a nurse who met him before he even had kidneys, to go with him. Brad believes that this is a win-win situation, and if not done, he will spend the rest of his life sending women to their forever families.
The protagonist is skeptical, as not every woman he dates goes on to get married. Brad explains that it only happens with anyone you like enough to ask out more than twice. He believes that the soulmate of the woman they date is the person they meet after you, and they are fated
