    Fated Date - Elizabeth Dunlap

    One

    Why was I here?

I stood, my small clutch purse in my hands, shifting from one foot to the other at the restaurant entrance, waiting for my friends to come. Well. I say friends. It was more like a witch sorority house, one I didn’t intend on joining and was now stuck in. I was obligated to meet with them every so often, and I honestly don’t know why I kept going. I could just pretend I’m sick, or tired, or busy.

    Felicity!

I turned upon hearing my name and saw the rest of the witches coming into the restaurant. They all looked so perfect in their pretty clothes, and those smiles on their faces spoke of a happiness I had yet to discover.

Fuck you and your happy bullshit.

Shutting my eyes, I sighed to wash out the bad thoughts and was all bright smiles when I opened them back up. Hi, ladies.

Look at you, always early. Brinnan lightly smacked me with her clutch purse as a joke, winking at me as she caught the seating hostess’ attention. I used to be early to things. Then I got married and had kids.

Ah ha ha ha. So funny, Brinnan.

Seralee hooked her arm in mine and tugged on me, almost making me tip over. Felicity! Are you still single?

    Sigh.

Before I could answer, Conya spoke up, waving her perfect manicure around. Seralee, don’t jinx it. One of the few stable things in my life is Felicity being single. I need this one thing to never change.

Onmi rolled her eyes at our antics, like it was adorable to see them harassing me. Ladies, I’m famished. All I’ve eaten this morning is water, and I gained a pound from it. I hope this restaurant has low calories.

Thila led the way to our table and we all sat down, unrolling our silverware and placing the cloth napkins across our knees. Yes, it was that fancy of a restaurant. We all ordered our cob salads, the only thing we ate at these lunches, and began waiting for our food.

So, ladies, Thila opened. She was the leader of our sorority, and the one who always seemed to have her life together. Unlike me. Tell me how you’ve been. We’ve all heard about Felicity still being single, so everyone else gets a turn.

    What the actual fuck.

I just got a promotion at my enchantment job for making a new kind of weather machine spell, but sure, who I’m fucking, or not fucking, is the only news that mattered.

Brinnan opened by saying her life was amazing, as always, and she bragged for a full three minutes about the awesome sex she’s having with her husband after they started trying new kinks. Could’ve gone the rest of my life without hearing how you like to be spanked, but okay.

Conya was next, and she sobbed for five minutes about her husband leaving her for another woman. We’d already heard this story, because it happened, oh… two years ago. But I said nothing, because pain is pain.

Seralee bragged about her job promotion, and then informed us she had three new sex partners. Also her two kids had just been accepted into our old school, Highborn Academy, the only witch school worth attending. She hinted that she’d bribed the school to get them in early, as if that was something to be proud of. We all knew the school would never accept bribes for admission, not to mention it rarely denied applications. There was a time three years ago when they just built a new dormitory instead of saying they were too full to accept more students.

When it was her turn, Onmi slapped her hand on the table, making me jump. I have a special treat for you ladies today. There’s this new app that’s supposed to find your fated mate for you.

Yes, let’s talk about dating apps instead of things that really mattered. Sounds fun.

Onmi passed her phone over to me without asking if I wanted to see. She’d pulled up the app for me to look at. It was all pink with hearts everywhere, popping out of the enchanted phone screen.

    Fated 4 U.

Sounds like a dating sim game,
