About this ebook

The longer I live the more I'm convinced that
a successful life is about relationships, making them and nurturing them.

Daniel Fowler enjoys sharing interesting and sometimes humorous stories with impactful messages.

In a collection of personal essays, he offers a candid glimpse into his life and experiences while imparting bits of wisdom he has learned along the way. His essays address a variety of topics that include priorities, aging, what to do on a bad day, depression, leadership, and the legacy of being a good parent. As he leads others through his experiences, Fowler encourages reflection about whether the ego is in check; how to be a great advocate, advisor, and friend; and why it is important to smile, give a warm handshake, and express gratitude to everyone we meet in life.

Life Must Have a Purpose shares personal essays that explore one man’s life experiences and the valuable lessons he is still embracing and passing on to a younger generation.

    Acknowledgments

No book is possible without the help and encouragement of friends and relatives.

Writing does not come easily for me. It’s hard work. I want to thank my family, friends, and business associates for their encouragement.

I’ve had some great mentors along the way. My dad and mom, John and Bernell Fowler, had the greatest impact on my life. One’s relationship with his or her parents is pivotal to success as an adult. Both my parents were phenomenal at giving advice. The Reverend Gerald Bock, another mentor, helped me form a religious and spiritual aspect in my life that I carry today.

My first manager, the late Don Hughes, gave me the opportunity to get where I am today. Without him, I don’t know where I’d be today.

I also must point out that without American Family Insurance, where I have been an agent for more than forty-seven years, none of this would be possible. American Family encourages us to be community oriented. My freedom as an agent allows me to flourish as a community activist.

I must also acknowledge my dedicated office staff. Its combined 118 years of experience sets our agency apart from all the rest by giving not only the service customers expect but also the service they don’t expect. My staff is the engine of my agency.

Last, but not least, there’s my wife, Sandy, who stands by me in every venturous thing I do in life.

    Dedicated To Our Four Children

    Justin, Julie, Jenny and Janell

Our four children are of special pride for both me and my wife. Our life has been filled with joy while raising them and seeing them emerge in middle age with great successes. They have provided us with nine grandchildren who are healthy and all-around good kids.

That’s not to say that our family is perfect, just like every family we have had resolvable issues over the years. Every family is dysfunctional to a certain degree. My family is not perfect, but they are perfect for us.

We meet every other Sunday for dinner, at our house or one of theirs. It’s a way to stay together, stay up on what’s going on in their lives as well as ours. More importantly, it’s a time for all their kids to see and play with their cousins.

I heard a talk given by the late William Danforth, Chancellor of Washington University, while here in St. Louis. He said that your children will be the judge of your legacy and no one else. No matter how successful you are as a person and accomplishments, your children will judge you on how well you raised them and provided an education for them. I believe that is true.

To say the least, we are proud of our kids and love them with all our hearts.

    Introduction

This book, in simple terms, is a lifetime collection of short stories that are amusing, interesting, and full of advice. These are not my stories. Rather, they are stories I have heard my entire life. I am blessed with a great memory and enjoy telling a great story.

If you like amusing stories that drive home a point, you will enjoy this book.

If you like a book that you can learn from, this is a book you will enjoy. There is a wide range of stories in this book, and readers can find ones to learn from or take something away from.

I think you will find yourself laughing at parts of it, while coming away at times thinking about its seriousness.

It’s an easy read. Each story is short, so it’s a book you can put down and come back to without missing a thing. It’s also a book that you can read repeatedly.

You will find advice given to me about topics such as priorities, aging, what to do on a bad day, depression, and leadership. Almost every subject is covered.

Profits from this book will go to the American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.
