The Invention
H mm, that’s unusual ,
thought Everest, as he lay on his bedding next to Bailey, watching the professor as he darted around his workshop, creating another crazy invention. Bailey yawns, looking up with little interest, before slumping his head back down on the blanket.
What are you fussing about now, Everest?
he mutters in a long yawn.
It’s the professor, I’m sure he was speaking dog just now.
Don’t be silly, humans don’t speak dog, you’re probably just dreaming, go back to sleep.
Everest lays his head down, still watching the professor as he goes about his business. He is sure he had heard the professor barking. Maybe he was dreaming, perhaps he imagined it, or was it lack of sleep? He began to drift off into another afternoon's deep sleep.
Woof, woof, woof.
Everest opens his eyes in surprise. There, leaning over him is the professor, barking at him. He can understand every bark.
Everest, I’ve done it,
barks the professor.
Done what, he thought, gazing through his sleepy eyes? The professor is wearing some kind of dog collar, with lots of wires and blinking lights on it. Now what has he invented? thought Everest.
Humans call him Professor Watkins, but Everest and Bailey call him Professor Wotnot, because he is always tinkering and wot-not. He is some kind of inventor and scientist, coming up with some mad ideas, but not always good ones. He is very creative and loves to try to find new ideas to help dogs, such as the heated collar for cold day walks. A good idea in principle, but it got too hot and sizzled Bailey's neck hair. He had a dark brown circle of hair around his neck for months, which really stood out against his blonde hair. The other dogs in the street had a good laugh at poor old Bailey. There were the paw booties with wheels, but none of the dogs could stand up and they all fell to the ground, legs out like a new-born giraffe. And not forgetting the doggy wash, based on a car wash. You put a coin in, stand on a moving belt and go through the wash, shampoo and blow dry, coming out the other side all clean and fluffy. This one was actually a success and the design gave the professor the money to continue his inventions.
He was a very kind man, quite old with a mop of white hair which went in every direction. He stood
