About this ebook
Want to build a better life?
You will need a blueprint.
That is a success secret I learned from an iron worker when I was 10 years old. He said:
Life is like building a house. Things don't always go as planned. There are often delays, overruns, and accidents. But despite all these challenges, a house is never built without a blueprint. And neither is a great life.

When I was little, I spent a weekend with my Uncle Bobby in Richland, Washington. I remember him schlepping me along to one of those opportunity meetings. You know, the kind where they draw circles on a board and explain geometric growth? The speaker was an iron worker, just like my uncle.
I will never forget what he said that day, Life is a lot like building. Things don’t always go as planned. There are often delays, overruns, and accidents. But despite all these challenges, a house is never built without a blueprint. And neither is a great life.
So at the ripe old age of 10, I went home understanding one of life’s secrets:
A great life is built with a blueprint.
45 years later, I have never seen this law broken. Not once. While some people may stumble into fortune and fame, great lives are always built by design. This may be the reason some prominent people, those who seem to have everything, take their own lives. Or maybe why others go from rags to riches... and then back to rags again.
I have observed thousands of people from all walks of life in my 37-year career. I have never met a single person who does not wish for a better life. But everyone knows there is a big difference between wishing for something and actually having it.
I remember going to my dad as a small child, saying: I wish I had a bicycle.
At the time, he was a hard-working man of very little means. He answered, Wish in one hand and spit in the other. See which one fills up first.
That might sound harsh. But, he taught me that waiting around for others to deliver your wishes is a waste of time. Instead, you must take charge and do the work yourself if you want a better life. No one can do it for you. Surely not your boss. Nor your friends. Not even your parents.
