About this ebook

In which 10 friends end up meeting each other through a series of coincidences.

Noah has been having a dream about the same girl since he was 12. He believes he'll never find her. But on a rainy day, she stands before him.

Nina and a mysterious boy with green eyes embark on an adventure in which they chase after a lost cat and avoid getting caught by the grumpy man who guards the park.

Delilah finds herself in the plot of a shoujo manga when she coincidentally meets the son of her favorite mangaka.

Dara's attempts of wanting to impress her crush leave her with mango juice on her clothes. Spoiler alert: it worked?

Misoa is going to fire herself from her job, but she must face one last hurdle before she can taste freedom and get home in time for the party she's holding for Delilah's homecoming.

All of them end up in a bowling alley by midnight, and someone ends up getting slapped across the face.

When Life Gave Them Lemons - Kelly L.K

    Prelude

    12:00

    Midnight

    I TOLD YOU NOT TO LOOK AT MY BOOBS! screeches a drunk woman. Wait, I’ve gotten ahead of myself. Let me start from the beginning: It was another typical night at the bowling alley. Although no one came to the place so late, night shifts and duties were still mandatory for the poor souls that worked there. The bowling alley was empty, safe for the ten people there that were causing too much ruckus. Now I need you to imagine something;

There are five boys and five girls, all in their early to mid-twenties. Imagine a girl in a wheelchair, one wearing a teal hijab, one short with dark skin, one holding the short one back, and one standing beside the boy who worked there, carrying a tray of snacks with shock printed on both of their faces.

Now imagine the tipsy, short one stomping towards one of the boys, barely standing on her feet before she slaps him across the face.

The other three men standing behind them are perplexed beyond words, the one in a black coat and turtleneck snickering while the others are preparing to run away from embarrassment.

I told you not to look at my boobs! the girl who’d slapped the man screeches, being pulled back by one of the girls who is ready to dig her own grave and hide in it.

Everyone in that alley is near-to-completely speechless.

    Let’s pause.

Now you might be wondering, how the hell did it come to that exact moment with all ten of them? Well, to explain that, I’ll have to take you to the very beginning, from the moment the first text message was sent to the moment all ten met each other through coincidences orchestrated by the universe’s mysterious ways.

You see, this is a story in which life gave all ten of these people lemons. This is a story in which you get to witness what exactly they decided to do with said lemons.

LEILA’S DAY always started at around 10. She’d get up, pray Fajr at the ass crack of dawn, go to sleep, wake up once again, have breakfast with her family, and then she’d go on her daily walk. It was not a normal day unless she did so. Even when she had to be up early for her job, she never missed a day of walking around her neighborhood. On weekends like today, she had the opportunity to go on a long walk.

So, she did exactly that. After brushing her short, raspberry-blue hair, she stuffed it all into a beige hijab. She slipped into her jogging shoes and left her house. It had rained earlier in the morning, around the same time Misoa, her best friend, had texted her and the rest of her friend group, inviting them over to her house. She had the entire day to pick out her clothes for the night and get her chores done. She only wanted to jump into small puddles and fill her lungs with fresh petrichor.

It was a lovely day in her usually tropical city, the winds blowing unsolicited joy in her direction. Many young boys played football in the streets, some adults walking to their jobs while others were on their way to the college beside her house. The chirps of birds were loud and clear at this time of the day, cats scavenging about for food. In the morning, there was more joy in the part of her that peeked through the windows of her eyes. In the morning, more love awaited a chance to jump into the air in that silent crackle we sense with our souls. In the morning, a more deep sweetness resonated within, and found a way to express this energy that was Leila.

Although initially hard, Leila had gotten used to living in her city. She and her family had moved from Yemen five years ago after her father had found a well-paying job. The only thing Leila had known prior to moving was that she had lived in her current city when she was younger before moving again. Leila had spent many years of her life moving around because of her father’s job. So when he landed a well-paying job that assured him he could support his
